Neuroaffirming Values

Neurodiversity is human diversity

Here at ANNA, we built our approach around the belief that difference is not a deficit. Autistic children experience the world in ways that are unique and valuable, and our role is to support them in developing skills that honor how their mind works.

Definition

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the idea that human brains do not all work the same way, and that this variation is a natural form of human diversity.

A neuroaffirming perspective shifts the question from:

“How do we make this child appear more typical?”

“How do we support this child to thrive as their authentic self?”

A Note on Language

Language preferences vary within the autism community. Many autistic individuals prefer identity-first language (“autistic person”) because autism is an important part of who they are. Others prefer person-first language (“person with autism”) to emphasize the individual before the diagnosis.

Our Word

At ANNA we respect both and follow the preferences of each family and individual.

Diagnostic Evaluations

The way an autistic child is described in an evaluation can shape how they are supported for years to come. Our clinicians conduct strengths-based developmental evaluations that provide families with a comprehensive and affirming understanding of their child.
